A COVID-19 patient being treated at the Addu Equatorial Hospital has passed away.

An official from the Equatorial Hospital told ONE Online that a 97-year-old Maldivian man being treated for COVID-19 passed away this morning at 7:50 a.m.

The man was transferred from Fuvahmulah City to the COVID-19 treatment facility in Addu on 26 September after his condition got severe.

With the most recent COVID-related death today, the COVID death toll in the Maldives has risen to 233 with that of 216 locals and 17 foreigners. The highest number of COVID deaths were reported in the country in May 2021 where 13 deaths were reported on the 25th alone.

The first COVID-related death was reported on 29 April 2020 following the death of an 83-year-old woman.
