President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the roots of corruption spread across this country while government institutions were on its knees in front of deception, during the previous administration.
President Solih said this during his presidential address on the occasion of the first sitting of Parliament, 2019 that took place at Dharubaaruge today. The President noted that no government body was safe from the contamination of theft, corruption and criminal activity at the time that he took office. He added that the government institutions designated to investigate or address corruption had not taken necessary steps during that time.
President Solih also said that there was no government institution within the State that was exempt from contamination by discord or corruption at that time that he took office. The President noted in his address that the laws and regulations to fight corruption had existed at the time when the nation had fallen into this condition. President Solih said that government institutions designated to investigate or address corruption had merely implemented basic rules during this time.
The President said that the Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery has taken in various documents regarding the case of corruption at MMPRC. He reported that while foreign experts are contributing their skills in the investigation to the case of corruption, foreign governments are also assisting in the progress of these investigations.
The President assured that the full efforts are underway to reach the truth regarding cases of corruption and theft. He reiterated that work is ongoing to return the finances that are owed to the State. President Solih added that measures will be taken against all responsible parties involved as dictated by the law.
