President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that similar to Male’ City, the price of staple goods are to be lowered from April throughout the Atoll islands.

President Solih said this during his presidential address on the occasion of the opening of Parliament 2019.

The President said that establishing equal rules among all citizens in receiving government services is one of the highest priorities of this administration.

As such, the President declared that islands of all Atolls will be able to purchase staple goods for the same prices as in Male’ City, starting from April. While President Solih has declared the same prices to be allocated on all staple goods, State Trading Organization Plc. is currently selling one kilogram of sugar for MVR 4. Additionally, STO is currently selling a kilogram of rice for MVR 3.98 and a kilogram of flour can be purchased for MVR 2.98.

The price of staple goods are currently higher in the other local islands due to the charges incurred in transporting the goods.

The Ministry of Economic Development have also set measures to ensure that prices do not increase on staple goods. As such, the Ministry’s regulations ensure that any increase in prices of staple goods range from between MVR 0.89 to MVR 1.21 per one kilogram.
