An Indian news source has reported that Maldivian Chief of Defense Force, Major General Abdulla Shamal has reported the ongoing installation of ten radars in Maldives. The radar system was previously given to Maldives by India in order to manage the defense of the oceans surrounding Maldives.

The Associated Editor of India’s Strategic News International, Amitabh P. Revi had published an interview given by the Maldivian Chief of Defense Force yesterday.

The interview was reportedly given by Major General Shamal during his visit accompanying the Maldivian Minister of Defense Mariya Ahmed Didi to India last week.

Im response to a question posed, the Chief of Defense said that the Coastal Surveillance Radar System (CSRS) gifted by India to Maldives consists of ten radar systems. The Major General also informed that a “Common Operating Picture” is to be included following the installation if the system and the establishment of its network.

The Chief of Defense also noted that the radar system is integral within the commercial areas of the oceans surrounding Maldives. Major General Shamal said that no more than ten radar systems will be installed in Maldivian waters.

The project for the installation of a Coastal Surveillance Radar System (CSRS) gifted by India began in 2016 during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. There was however a hold up in the installation prior to the completion of the first phase, after President Yameen strengthened ties with China.
