President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that teachers in the Maldives will be getting a salary and benefits increment next year.

The President made the remark at the special assembly at Rehendhi School this morning to commemorate the new Academic Year and said that it is one of the most important campaign promises of his administration.

He said that it is important to find the best way for those in the education sector to bring positive changes to the social issues in the country.

President Solih also assured that local teachers who can work outside their islands in the subjects that are difficult to find teachers for, will be given the opportunity to do so with the appropriate benefits.

Highlighting that teachers had been carry a huge weight during the previous academic year amid the peak of COVID-19 pandemic, the President said that their work had been priceless.

On 16 November 2019, Education Minister, Dr. Aishath Ali had said that a lot of efforts are being made to raise the salary and benefits for teaches and hope to see them come to fruition soon.

However, the global pandemic soon after had halted the process among other things.
