A person who stole a perfume bottle from Red Wave store at the Galolhu stadium back in 2017 has been fined to pay MVR 18,000.

The 36-year-old Mohamed Mihad from That Atoll Vilufushi took a bottle of Aries perfume and pocketed it in his jeans and was attempting to leave without paying when store staff stopped him at 7:13 p.m.

When the police came, he admitted to trying to leave without paying and was charged with unlawful authority over the property of another.

He admitted to the crime during the trial as well request a reduced sentence.

At his trial, Mihad, who is currently in prison for another crime, said that he tried to steal the bottle on that day because he was addicted to drugs. He also said that he has 16 months left on his current prison sentence.

Ando so, Judge Adam Mohamed decided on a punishment that would give guilty a chance to be beneficial to the society rather than alienating him. And so, the sentence was a fine of MVR 18,000 to be paid within six months to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
