A rescuer of the people who were drowning after going swimming at Baa Atoll Fulhadhoo has died.

President of the Fulhadhoo Island Council, Ali Azharu told One Online that a 36-year-old man who was rescuing four people in a drowning incident died today.

Council President Azharu said that the deceased is one of the people in the group visiting the island on holiday.

He said that he too made it to the area of the incident and went in the water to help with the rescue where four people were drowning.

Azharu said that they were a bit far out at the swimming beach and what he could find was a pellet which he used to bring two people to shore. And one of them was non-responsive at the time as well.

Sharing his story, the Fulhadhoo Council President said that the Goedhoo Council President called him in the morning request permission to go swimming in the area and was approved. Azharu said that later in the day, he got a call back saying that people in the area are signal from the swimming area.

Managing Director of the Fulhadhoo Health Center, Amjad Ali told One Online that a drowning victim was brought in at 1:30 p.m. and was dead on arrival. And the death was confirmed at 2:30 p.m.

Amjad said that even though others were reportedly drowned, no other person is being treated at the Health Center.

Maldives Police Service said that a drowning incident at B. Fulhadhoo was reported at 2:30 p.m. and they are making inquiries.

Many have traveled to other islands on vacation for the 14 days of holidays in conjunction with the Eid and the Independence Day.
