President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that the freedoms the Island and Atoll Councils would be getting comes with certain responsibilities.

The President made the remarks at the second meeting of "Jazeera Holhuashi" attended by the Vice President, Faisal Naseem, cabinet ministers and other state officials. Speaking at the event, President Solih said that presenting the amendment to the Local Governance Authority Act to the parliament is in the government's 100 Day Agenda to empower the Councils.

President Solih noted that empowering the Councils alone would not make them efficient and needs financial stability as well. And so the government is working to allow Atoll Councils to rent lands to generate state income.

The President also said that the government will be working with Councils to develop the basic services provided in the islands.

President Solih said that when the Councils are empowered with more freedom, they will also have to carry more responsibilities. And so the income generated must be used in a way that is beneficial to the public.

At the Meeting, the President said that amending the act would be easier when Councils share information on the changes that have been made and the changes that are required.

Discussions have been held in the past in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, Shaviyani Fonadhoo, Raa Alifushi, Kaafu Gaafaru and Addu City to get feedback on amending the legislation. The meeting in Male' City last night was the last of the feedback sessions.
