Statistics has shown that the highest number of tourist visits to the Maldives this month so far was on yesterday.
Daily statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism show 4,818 tourists visiting the Maldives yesterday. Tourist visits on other days of the month average between 2,000 and 3,000 tourists. Sunday saw 4,614 tourist visits.
A total of 564,228 tourists have visited the country this year. This is more tourists than the entirety of the past year.
With a global pandemic spreading COVID-19 across the world, the Maldives was forced to close its border for three months which resulted on 554,494 tourist visits during the entire year.
Before the spread of COVID-19, the July of 2019 saw an average of 4,000 to 5,000 tourists visiting the country on a daily basis. The year 2019 saw a total of 1,702,887 tourist visits to the Maldives.
And so, with over 500,000 tourists visiting the country by the middle of the year, it is believed that the estimated figure of tourists visits for this year, 1,500,000 tourists, will be achieved at the end of the year.
Tourism Minister, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has previously said that the Maldivian tourism will see a boost in August 2021 and said that vaccine tourism will be introduced on the final quarter of the year.
