The Women's Spirit of the leading party of the current government coalition, MDP, has said that cruel acts can be stopped by passing the bill on hate speech as it stands right now at the parliament.
In a statement issued by the women's wing of the party yesterday said that one of the most important promises of the party in the 2018 Presidential Election and the 2019 Parliament Election was to get justice those who have suddenly disappeared and murdered, and to prevent more of those cruel and brutal acts.
The statement said that it is clear that the from the brutal killings of the journalists Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla, Yaamin Rasheed and MP Dr. Afrashim were all brutally killed and most recent, an attempt was made on the life of the Speaker of the Parliament former President Mohamed Nasheed was possible because certain groups "labelled" them and were allowed to monger hate towards them in the community.
And so, the statement said, that they believe that the the bill on hate speech, in its current form, needs to be passed and amend the Penal Code to prevent further brutally by criminalising hate speech and hate mongering against individuals.
The statement further said that MDP is a party that strives for moderate religion on the country and the party would not support anything that is against the fundamentals of the Islamic faith and the party believes that freedoms should be exercised on a way that they don't conflict with religion.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he cannot support the current administration if the bill is not passed in its current form.
