The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), has asked the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to put a hold on the registration of Rehendhi flats for former VP Abdulla Jihad. Jihad was the Vice President during the previous administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. There were two flats in the Rehendhi luxury apartment complex that had been arranged to accommodate - and later be owned by - VP Jihad during Yasmeen's administration.
Abdulla Jihad was the third appointed Vice President of President Yameen’s administration. While a total of 10 flats were allocated for government use, eight of the flats were handed to certain seniors of various independent institutions. The remaining two flats arranged for former VP Jihad.
The reason why former VP Jihad had been arranged accommodation at Rehendhi flats was due to changes brought during President Yameen’s administration. While previously, Vice Presidents had typically stayed at Hilaalee Ge, the President had taken up residency there. In addition to that, the other residence available, which was Muliaage was being used as a campaign office by the First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.
The President of ACC, Hassan Luthfee informed One Online that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development have been informed to halt the proceedings to grant ownership of two apartments in Rehendhi flats to former VP Jihad.
The President of ACC informed that this us due to various matters that need to be looked into. He assured that the current halt in processes do not necessarily mean that there has been a cancellation of the flat ownership. Luthfee said that the order was sent to the Ministry of Housing and that he is yet unaware whether the order has even been implemented.
Luthufee said that he believes that similar to benefits granted to former Presidents, previous Vice Presidents who have left their posts with their integrity, should also be afforded the honor that comes with their posts. He said however that this is a matter that needs to be officially concluded by the government.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has not been available for a comment.
