Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved to give USD 25.1 million to the Maldives for the beach protection projects in the country in association with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The decision to donate the fund was made today and the decision was announced by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology in a press statement today.
According to the Ministry statement, JICA is set to donate USD 35.4 million to the projects while the Maldivian government donates USD 5.5 million.
The beach protection projects are set to be carried in Maamendhoo, Fonadhoo, Gan Isdhoo in the Laamu Atoll and select area of Meedhoo, Addu City. The Environment Ministry said that the project is part of the government's strategic plans against climate change to protect inhabited islands.
The projects entail a study and risk assessment to strengthen the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) to project ensure the natural resources are project during the course of the project. It also entails establishing a natural disaster alert system by providing the tools to observe sea level rising and monitor beaches, reefs and land usage, according to the Ministry.
