The Prosecutor General’s office has withdrawn charges of terrorism that had been raised during the previous administration, yesterday. As such, charges have been withdrawn from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, his son and MP for Dhiggaru constituency Faris Maumoon and the son-in-law of President Maumoon, Mohamed Nadheem.
The Prosecutor General’s office has withdrawn the charges following a ruling by the Supreme. Court last February 2018.
The office had therefore sent out separate statements to each person the charges were withdrawn against. The statements read that the charges raised were, of working with other parties to overthrow a legally elected government through bribing members of the Supreme Court Judges and MPs. The statement further said that the PG office has decided not to further implement the hearing submitted at Criminal Court, raising charges of terrorism and said that the case has been returned to Maldives Police Service by the PG office.
The charges were also raised previously, against MP for Kimbidhoo constituency Abdulla Riyaz as well the Commissioner of Police during the time the case was submitted, Ahmed Arif.
The PG office has also withdrawn charges against these accused as well. In addition to that, charges were raised against former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, former Judge of the Supreme Court Ali Hameed as well as MP for Machchangoalhi-South constituency Abdulla Sinaan and MP for Dhangethi constituency Ilham Ahmed.
