The government has decided to reduce the price of the internet service provided in the Maldives by 28 to 30 percent.

At a virtual event this morning, the government said that the price drop will be made in two phases.

The change is set to take effect from July 2021 for broadband internet service for residential buildings and from October 2021 for mobile internet.

And so, the lowest or throttled speeds for residential internet packages are set at 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps. A change that effectively doubles the current lowest speeds of 1 Mbps.

Changes to the internet packages:

  • 30 GB at 5 Mbps for MVR 250 with a throttled speed of 2 Mbps
  • 100 GB at 15 Mbps for MVR 500 with a throttled speed of 5 Mbps
  • 200 GB at 25 Mbps for MVR 750 with a throttled speed of 5 Mbps

These three packages are a price drop from the current packages for MVR 350, 690 and 990.

Reducing the price of the internet was a campaign pledge of the current administration.

The government said that they would be regulating the price and quality of the internet services when the price reduction policy gets implemented.
