The government has decided that the lowest internet speed that can be provided in the Maldives is 2 Mbps.
Reducing the price of the internet was a campaign pledge of the current administration.
At a virtual event this morning, the government said that the price drop will be made in two phases.
And so, the lowest or throttled speeds for residential internet packages are set at 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps. A change that effectively doubles the current lowest speeds of 1 Mbps.
These three packages are a price drop from the current packages for MVR 350, 690 and 990.
The government said that they would be regulating the price and quality of the internet services when the price reduction policy gets implemented.
The aim of the current administration is to reduce the spending on add-ons for internet packages and eliminate the technical difficulties getting online services due to low speeds.
