Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa has resigned as the chair of Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee, after denying recent allegations of domestic violence.
In a statement that was tweeted on Thursday, the lawmaker said that he has resigned as the chair of Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee to cooperate fully with the authorities on the ongoing domestic violence allegations against him.
In his statement, MP Easa also said that he has never done anything that violates the Maldivian law and constitution, and assured his constituents of the same.
He asserted that he fully trusts the Maldives Police Service and that state institutions would always receive his cooperation.
While MP Easa resigned from the committee, the committee had convened on the same day to decide on his dismissal from the committee. However, after being unable to meet the quorum to vote for a dismissal, the meeting was adjourned.
The domestic violence case was reported to the Police by a neighbour of his former spouse, Asra Naseem. She is the younger sister of Vice President, Faisal Naseem.
Asra had also given a statement to the Family and Child Protection Department.
The Prosecutor General's Office is currently seeking an order of arrest from the Criminal Court.
