Leader of the Jumhooree Party (JP) and Speaker of Parliament, Qasim Ibrahim, has said that that a change in system of governance is being attempted to ensure President Solih does not complete his term.

Qasim said this while speaking at a campaign event of Parliamentary hopeful for Vilimale’ constituency on a JP ticket, former VP Dr. Mohamed Jameel. The Speaker of Parliament said that, the public widely approves of a parliamentary democracy in the country.

He said raised the question therefore as to how one person could be attempting to change the system. Qasim said that the hope of this change is to ensure that President Solih does not get to complete his five year term. He reiterated that a particular person strongly wishes to take on the Presidency. Qasim has called this move selfish and outrageous.

The Speaker of Parliament indirectly implied former President Nasheed and said that the former President Mohamed Nasheed wishes to acquire a “super” majority and change the constitution. Qasim said that he hopes that the public follows the overtaking of Parliamentary seats with an awareness of the situation.
