Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that passing a Bill that violates a particular individual’s rights will bring on pressure from other countries. Dr. Shaheed is a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and the current United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

While Dr. Shaheed has made the remark in a tweet sent out today, JP member and MP for Dhidhoo constituency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed, had proposed an amendment barring former presidents from running for Parliament.

While the President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed is a former President of Maldives, he has also announced his campaign for a seat at the 19th Parliamentary body of Maldives. Should the amendment pass, President Nasheed will be barred from contesting in Parliamentary elections.

MDP has since said that the amendment is being enacted, specifically targeting former President Nasheed.

Today, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that he will not ratify the amendment, even if it passes through the floor of People's Majlis. The President had said that he will not be ratifying any bill that violates the Constitution or the political efforts of any particular individual.
