Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed has said that the explosives attack last night was intended to assassinate the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at a police press conference today, Commissioner Hameed said that based on the explosives used and how the attack was carried out, the attack was intended to assassinate the former President.

He said that four people believed to be connected to the attack have been noticed and the police are working to identify them.

Commissioner Hameed said that over 400 officers are involved in various aspects of the investigation and no intelligence information was received prior to the attack.

The former President is currently in the ICU at ADK Hospital while three of his bodyguards who were also injured in the attack have been released after treatment.

The family said that former President Nasheed is no longer in critical condition.
