President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assembled a committee to investigate critical and disrespectful statements against the Islamic faith. The move was carried out at this time where a there has been a recent upsurge in statements against the Islamic faith. The Committee assembled by the President is to investigate and take necessary actions against such behavior.
The President’s Office reported that the members of the committee include Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Defense Uz. Mariya Ahmed Didi, Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla, Minister of Higher education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof and the Chief of staff of the President's Office Ali Zahir.
The President’s Office reported that the cabinet has taken the decision that the Committee’s work will be carried out under the Social Council.
The main objective of the Committee is to discuss the cases concerning criticism and disrespect against Islam, with the relevant authorities. The President’s Office said that the Committee will be determining current and future actions that can be taken against criticisms aimed at Islam. The Committee will be investigating cases where critical statements have been made against Islam or where religion is used as a justification to harm people or property.
