Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that not voting in Local Council Elections is not a solution.
Speaking to reporters after voting, Speaker Nasheed said that voting is an important right and that it is a way of participating in decision-making activities. He added that not voting is not a solution and that doing so will not bring about a solution to any issues. He stressed that voting is a way people could be a part of nation-building.
Speaker Nasheed further added that the Elections Commission (EC) had done a great job with the arrangements and noted that voting is ongoing smoothly across the nation, including the capital city Male'.
He also stated that MDP will win with a landslide as per predictions and that the party will be able to secure a majority of local council seats with ease.
The elections which are so far the biggest election being held in the country was initially scheduled to be held on April 4th, 2020.
The elections which have a total of 3,934 candidates competing for local council seats have 273,182 eligible voters. Out of the 3,943 candidates, 2,264 candidates are competing for local council seats while 1,670 are competing to be part of organisations that work for women's development.
There are over 700 ballot boxes for the election with over 7,000 officials working to ensure a smooth run.
