President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has voted for the Local Council Election 2021.

President Solih voted at a ballot box for Lhaviyani Atoll placed at Jamaluddin School.

Speaking to reporters after voting, the President had appealed for a greater voter turnout and emphasized how important this election was. As such he added that the elected council members will be granted sweeping powers after the election concludes.

He also expressed his hope that MDP will receive a landslide victory, noting that he hopes the victory will be bigger than the victory they witnessed during the Parliamentary Elections.

The elections which are so far the biggest election being held in the country was initially scheduled to be held on April 4th, 2020.

The elections which have a total of 3,934 candidates competing for local council seats have 273,182 eligible voters. Out of the 3,943 candidates, 2,264 candidates are competing for local council seats while 1,670 are competing to be part of organisations that work for women's development.

There are over 700 ballot boxes for the election with over 7,000 officials working to ensure a smooth run.
