Highest tourist visits since border reopening recorded last month

Maldives Immigration has said that last month saw the highest number of tourist visits since the Maldives reopened its borders last year.

Statistics released by Immigration show that a total of 109,585 tourists visited the Maldives in March 2021 with a daily average of 3,535 tourists.

Previously, the highest number of tourist visits to the Maldives was in February 2021 with 96,882 tourists and 93,000 tourists before that in December 2020.

Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that a total of 298,570 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year with the most of them visiting from India, followed by Russia.

The country reopened its borders on 15 July 2020 after closing them on 27 March 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While last year saw 555,494 tourists have visited the Maldives, the government aims to raise that number to 1.5 million this year.
