The total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 20,565 after another 118 people tests positive for the illness.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that from 6 p.m. yesterday to 6 p.m. today, 118 people have tested positive that includes 95 people in Male' area, four from the atolls and 19 from the resorts. HPA did not clarify numbers in terms of locals and foreigners.

In the same time frame, 124 people recovered from COVID-19 raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 17,836 with another 2,658 people still in treatment.

Statistics from the HPA show 167 people being treated in hospitals.

Despite the low number of cases in December 2020, there has been a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases being reported that averages 100 cases daily.

So far, there have been 64 COVID-related fatalities in the Maldives that includes 57 locals, six Bangladeshi nationals and a Philippine national.
