President of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef has said that the Elections Commission has not made a request to delay the Local Council Election and the Women's Committees Election set for April.
He made the statement on Twitter after the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed remarked that the Elections Commission have been making excuses not to hold the election.
The elections have been set for 10 April, the Elections Commission have advised counsel from the parliament to delay the elections.
In his tweet last night, Shareef said that the Election Commission does not wish to delay the elections and acts within Article 7-F of the special Local Council Election Act.
The special Act on the Council Election passed by the parliament states that the elections need to be held before 9 May 2021.
