President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that it is unacceptable that any citizen should face obstacles in running for an election.

President Solih spoke to the press after voting in the MDP primaries today and said that actions taken to bar citizens from running in Parliamentary elections is against democracy.

He said that the prerequisites for running for a seat at Parliament is very clearly stated in the Constitution.

President Solih said that taking steps to include more conditions in the prerequisites in order to make the road to run for Parliament narrower is unacceptable

While President Solih has said this, it should be noted that an amendment has been proposed to bar former Presidents from running for Parliament.
