The hearing set for today in the trial of the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been cancelled.
Hearings were set for two charges, money laundering and accepting bribes, against the former President was at 9:30 a.m. this morning.
Media Official of the Criminal Court, Aman Mohamed Najeeb told One Online that today's hearing was cancelled upon the request of the former President's legal team due to travel difficulties and the COVID situation in the capital city.
Meanwhile, the lead defence counsel, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed yesterday said that some of the important documents required for the defence team have not been provided.
And the failure to provide those documents and the arrangement of other things raises a concern of an unfair trial of the former President.
Former President Yameen's defence team had requested the judge to acquire the missing documents in the past two hearings as well.
And the presiding judge said that a defence can be made with the documents currently at hand and and more documents will be provided as the trial progresses. The judge also told the defence to try and acquire the missing documents through Freedom of Information regulations.
