MDP has called on Jumhooree Party (JP) to take the initiative and ensure that the amendment proposed by JP member Abdul Latheef Mohamed. Abdul Latheef Mohamed had proposed an amendment to the constitution, barring former presidents from running for Parliament. While the amendment has been proposed MDP’s leader Mohamed Nasheed is a former President of Maldives.
The parliamentary group of MDP has called for this action in a statement released by the party.
The statement has urged that the amendment is unconstitutional and that the action would spread discord among the members of the Joint Parliamentary Group (JPG). The statement by MDP also urged JP to consider not disrupting the peace within the JPG.
The statement further said that the prerequisites for running for a position at Parliament is clearly written in the Constitution. MDP further said that the amendment has been put forward with the intention of specifically targeting Nasheed. The statement reiterated that MDP gravely condemns this action.
MDP has said that the amendment is targeting Nasheed after he has announced his campaign for the upcoming 19th body of Parliament. The statement further claimed that the unconstitutional actions against JP member Abdul Latheef Ahmed in the previous administration is the reason that Latheef does not think twice about violating political rights of another. MDP has named Latheef’s actions as low and cowardly.
