Government has designated all populated islands of Maldives as "safe zones" for swimming.
Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed, spoke at a press conference held by the Ministry today stating that discussions are underway with the local councils to designate safe zones for swimming at the islands.
While the Minister has made the announcement today, there have been several fatal drowning incidents within the past week alone. A tourist couple had died while snorkeling last Sunday, while another 66-year-old Korean woman died during treatment at the hospital after drowning.
The Minister addressed these accidents and said that a total of nine foreigners have died this past year due to various causes. He noted that three people who served in the industry have also passed away this year.
