The opposition alliance has begun a protest, calling for the release of former President Abdulla Yameen, who is currently serving a jail sentence for money laundering.

The protest that began tonight at 9:00pm near the office of PPM in Boduthakurufaanu Magu, and saw protestors march towards Rasfannu through Majeedhee Magu.

Senior members of the opposition leadership also took part in the protest.

The protesters were observed calling for the release of former President Abdulla Yameen, surrounded with the heavy presence of SO Police. Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam was also arrested during the protest.

Criminal Court on November 29, 2019 found President Yameen guilty of money laundering and fined him with USD Five million along with a jail term of five years.

Upon appeal, the High Court also upheld the verdict of the Criminal Court in the case. Last Thursday, two of the three judges presiding over the case reached an agreement to uphold the Criminal Court's verdict.
