Maldives Police Service has taken a group of people into their custody at the opposition rally calling to hold the Local Council Election.

The people who were taken into custody include the President of PNC and acting head of the opposition coalition, Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

The protesters gathered near the Election's Commission premises around 12:45pm today, demanding for the release of the opposition leader Abdulla Yameen and to hold the Local Council Elections as soon as possible.

Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey) was arrested during the protest, as they were en route to PPM office to wrap up the protest. He was arrested near the 'Raalhugandu' Area.

The opposition coalition said that 24 people were arrested from the protest including Adhurey.

The opposition also condemned the arrests strongly and called on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameedh to release them immediately.
