Britain's plans to withdraw from the European Union -popularly known as "Brexit" has failed.
British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday faced a major defeat at the House of Commons. Britain's plan to withdraw Britain from the European Union was rejected by 432-to-202 votes. This was the biggest margin by which a proposal put forth by a Prime Minister has been defeated in the British House of Commons.
While 230 members out of the 432 members of the House voted on the proposal, 202 votes went against the proposal. The proposal was rejected by the current ruling party's 118 members. PM Theresa May's failure to build consensus has increased the political chaos in Britain.
The opposition Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn called for a vote of no-confidence against PM Theresa May. While majority of the House did not support Brexit, most members have declared against the no-confidence vote. Most members of Parliament have also said that the way forward is through unity.
There were various celebrations over the failure of Brexit, following the rejection of PM Theresa May's proposal.
If all had gone according to plan with Brexit, Britain would officially cut ties with the European Union on 29 March 2019. The British Parliament now has to complete various tasks within the next three days under the action plan due to this turn of events. The action plans may need to revised and consensus will need to regained.
