Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has been fined with over MVR 1 million for illegally dumping waste in the lagoon of Kaafu Atoll Thilafushi.

Environment Protection Agency (EPA) said that WAMCO was fined with MVR 1.13 million under the Waste Management Act for repeated mishandling of waste that led to waste disposal at sea.

The EPA said that a large company such as WAMCO must follow the laws and have to operate with the permits from the EPA.

This is the first time WAMCO has faced such a fine.
