Former Judge, Mujthaz Fahmy has passed away during treatment for COVID-19.

He was tested positive during home quarantine while visiting the Laamu Atoll on holiday with the family. Mujthaz was tested after he got a fever.

The passing of the 60-year-old former Judge was announced by his younger brother and the MP for North Maafannu constituency, Imthiyaz Fahmy on Twitter. In his Tweet, he said that his brother passed around 2 a.m. last night.

Former Judge Mujthaz was brought to Male’ City for treatment yesterday evening as a high-risk category patient after undergoing treatment at the COVID facility at Laamu Gan.

Before his retirement, Judge Mujthaz served years in the Maldivian justice system with the most recent tenure as a Supreme Court Judge from 2008 to 2010.

With his passing, the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Maldives have risen today to 49. So far, 42 locals and seven foreigners, that consists of six Bangladeshi Nationals and a Philippine national, have passed away in the Maldives due to COVID-19.

The first reported COVID death in the Maldives was that of an 83-year-old local woman on 29 April 2020.
