Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem has said that there are 327 people are being detained until the end of their respective trials.
He made the remarks on Thursday’s special report to the parliament on the work of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) from 16 June to 15 December 2020 to achieve the goals in the policies of the Attorney General.
The Prosecutor General said that 29 of the 327 people ordered to be detained until the end of the trials are people who are not in remand jails due to capacity issues. And among those, there are those who had spent over 100 days awaiting transfer.
As for the remand facilities, PG Shameem said that there are 149 people in the Male’ Jail, 134 in Maafushi Jail, 14 people in Hulhumale’ Jail and a minor at Asseyri Jail. He said that the PG Office has decided to review the cases and release 39 people with set conditions and deport three people.
