Six charges against former Villimale' MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has been submitted to the Criminal Court, all of which are related to the massive MMPRC Corruption Scandal.
The Prosecutor General's Office said that they have decided to press six charges against Nihan. The decision comes after the investigation into his alleged involvement in the MMPRC Corruption scandal by the Police, ACC and Asset Recovery Committee.
The PG Office noted that during his tenure as the Villimale' MP and Head of Parliamentary Committee on Public Finance, he had sought bribes from then Vice President Ahmed Adeeb in return for favorable decisions from his position of power. The investigative reports also found that he had received bribes from VP Adeeb and had used said money for his personals gains as well.
They stressed that none of the financial statements released by Nihan between 2014 till 2019 disclosed said money.
The state is seeking to press three charges of accepting bribes, one charge of money laundering, and two charges of asking for bribes. They are also seeking the repossession of any materials purchased with the money along with the recovery of any remainder.
The PG Office further said that Nihan received a USD 150,000 bank cheque from Adeeb, which he used to purchase an apartment from Platinum Residence.
In addition to this, they revealed that he was found asking for a bribe for a Rolex Submariner watch in return to influence votes taken at the Parliament to select a Prosecutor General and a representative of the Parliament for Judicial Service Commission in 2014, a bribe which he received via a third party.
Further, he has been found accepting MVR 65,000 from Adeeb in exchange for influence over his decisions as a parliamentarian.
