Elections Commission (EC) has said that 114 candidates running for the Women’s Committees and the Local Council Election, has withdrawn their names.

Speaking on Raajje TV’s “Falasurukhee” program last night, the President of the EC, Ahmed Shareef said that 117 candidates running for the Women’s Committees have withdrawn their names so far and most of them are MDP candidates.

The EC President said that 25 MDP candidates have withdrawn their names along with three candidates of PPM and 12 candidates running independently.

The opportunity to withdraw names were opened on 23 June 2020.

With the amendment to the Local Government Act, the Local Council Election and the Women’s Committees election were set to take place in April 2020 but was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation.

The EC is currently working to hold the elections on 6 or 13 March 2021.
