12-year prison sentence in the murder of Addu businessman Abdulla Ali

Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Hithadhoo, Addu City) has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for the murder of Abdulla Ali, a businessman in Addu City.

The suspect, who is a nephew to the slain, was charged with intentionally killing a person for strangling and killing Abdulla Ali with a rope after kicking him off his motorcycle on the late hours of 2 March 2016.

At the Criminal Court, Ahmed Ibrahim Didi pleaded not guilty before the court delivered a verdict of guilty without a reasonable doubt, last month based on the evidence provided by the prosecution.

Three people who helped in the murder of Abdulla Ali were also charged with aiding in the intentional killing of a person. Three people charged with the crime are Maooz Mohamed (Hithadhoo, Addu City), Mubarik Mohamed (Hithadhoo, Addu City) and Mohamed Shifaz (Hithadhoo, Addu City).

The cases against them are still ongoing.

Maldives Police Service has previously said that Abdulla Ali was killed for money and after killing the victim, MVR 40,000 was taken from the victim and buried in a house which was found during the investigation. Police said that all of the credit on the phone in possession of the victim used to reload, was also transferred to another phone.
