Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated the US President-elect Joe Biden.

In a tweet following the AP call of the US election, President Solih said "congratulations to President-Elect Joe Biden on his election as the 46th President of the United States. I look forward to working with your administration on issues of mutual concern from global efforts to recover from COVID-19 to responding to the climate emergency".

Joe Biden is now projected to have 284 Electoral College votes according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

The president-elect was projected to have surpassed the 270 electoral vote-threshold after the AP called Pennsylvania in his favour.

“I am honoured and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect [Kamala] Harris,” Biden said in a statement a few minutes after the projection was announced.
