Former Deputy Chair of the MDP Action Committee, Shuaib Ali has said that the biggest benefit from the MMPRC corruption money was gained by the former President and current Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
Taking to Twitter today, Shuaib said that the MDP leaders received “charity” from the money embezzled out of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). He said that changes were made to the Constitution to change the age requirement for President and Vice President and the land the land leasing regulations during the Presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom under the direct orders from former President Nasheed to send himself to UK.
Changes to the Constitution were made during the Presidency of Abdulla Yameen with the vote of the MDP MPs as well. During which time, former President Nasheed was serving a 13-year-prison sentence and requested a medical visit to the UK which was granted by then government.
The age requirement for the President and Vice President was lowered from 65 to 35 to appoint the second Vice President of the Yameen Presidency, Ahmed Adeeb.
However, regulation on the age requirement was changed back to 65 when the government changed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took office.
Shuaib was removed from the MDP Action Committee after he criticized former President Nasheed’s efforts to remove Economic Minister Fayyaaz Ismail from office and sent a letter to the Chairperson of MDP, Hassan Latheef, requesting to take action against the former President Nasheed after accusing the former President of abusing party resources to influence decisions.
