Official talks have begun between the Maldives and the USA.

The talks began today at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa as part of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo’s official visit to the Maldives. Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid is taking part in the talks accompanied by various high-level officials from the Ministry.

Before meeting the Foreign Minister for the talks, Pompeo met with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the President’s Office this afternoon and signed the honorary dignitary’s book.

The visit to the Maldives by the Chief Advisor on Foreign Affairs to the US President Donald J. Trump, marks the first visit to the Maldives by a US state official in 28 years. The last visit was on 4 July 1992 by then Secretary of State, James Baker.
