Statistics have revealed that 56 percent of Maldivian youth are currently unemployed and are not seeking any further education or training.

Statistics by the National Bureau of Statistics released in time for the Youth Day revealed that 56 percent of the youth are unemployed and that they are neither seeking education nor any training. The statistics reveal that the majority of this includes women. As such, 41 percent of these are women while men account for 15 percent.

Most of the youth study Social Sciences, Business, and Law as per the stats. Education, Science, Health and Welfare follow closely behind.

Youth literacy rates are at 98 percent for both men and women. English literacy rates are at 78 percent for men and 74 percent for women.

The estimated youth population for the year 2020 is 240,584. This accounts for 43 percent of the total population.
