Former President Nasheed also says that there is a link between courts and local gangs.

Speaking at an event launching the primaries campaign of Parliamentary hopeful for the Inguraidhoo Constituency, MR. Ahmed Hassan (Hassantey), Nasheed says that the people of Maldives will not be a sustainable people if there is a link between courts and local gangs. He said that the people will not be a fulfilled people if the courts tend to carry out sentences that have been influenced by bribes, or any other type of pressure.

Former President Nasheed further reiterated that he does not believe former Attorney General Mr. Husnu Suood would fabricate the connection between local gangs and the criminal court and said that there is no personal benefit for Suood to allege trumped up charges against the courts.

"While Suood has formerly served as the Attorney General of Maldives, he has made various allegations regarding the judges of the courts. I certainly believe these allegations made by Suood. I believe that Suood would not lie. There is also no need for Suood to invent trumped up charges. There is a relationship between the Maldivian courts, local gangs and the gangs found on the streets of Maldives" Nasheed said. He further reiterated " If Maldivian courts are unable to carry out proper sentencing , and if the courts are issuing sentences with the influence of bribes, or any other pressures; this is not the progress that we want to see".

Nasheed said in his speech that justice will not be served to the Maldivian people unless there are fair and impartial court procedures. He also highlighted that the institution to investigate judges and make them accountable is the Judicial Services Commission. Nasheed said that the work of the commission is currently on-going and that it will be a high priority task for the 2019-elected Parliamentary body of Maldives to keep a close watch on the work of the Judicial Services Commission.

Former President Nasheed also alleged that judges have worked together to result mistrials in cases concerning homicides. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also took part in the campaign event held last night.

The Supreme Court of Maldives as well as the Criminal Court have condemned allegations made by Mr. Husnu Suood regarding the link between courts and local gangs. The Criminal Court has since said that it will investigate the matter.
