The burning oil tanker off the coast of Sri Lanka has started leaking oil into the ocean.
Indian and Sri Lankan teams were mobilized and controlled the fire after the vessel tarted burning on Thursday. However, news outlets in Sri Lanka has reported secondary fires due to the heat according to the navy.
The Sri Lankan Navy has said that signs of diesel were found about a kilometer away from the vessel. They estimate it is oil from the engine room that got washed out since salt water was used to control the fire.
The Navy has said that the main tan is secured and has no chance of leaking to the ocean.
The Panama-flagged vessel, New Diamond, was carrying 270,000 tons of crude oil and anther 1,700 tons of diesel fuel.
Teams of environmental specialists from Sri Lanka are now operating at the scene.
