Statistics from the Ministry of Finance and Treasury has shown that the Maldivian national debt has risen to MVR 73 billion.

The statistics on the debt released up to June 2020 show the national debt at MVR 73.9 billion with the foreign debt at MVR 37.7 billion and the internal debt at MVR 36 billion.

The annual state budget of 37 billion passed by the parliament for this year includes a deficit of MVR 6 billion.

While the government has taken 115 loans in the past 41 years, 76 loans have been paid off with 39 loans pending.

The information released by the Finance Ministry show that the government has taken 12 loans this year. And the country has received USD 222 million through various loans and free aid.

Finance Minister, Ibrahim Ameer said that another USD 700 million has been assured to the country with USD 345 million that has been signed for.
