Speaker of the Parliament, the former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that the Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture, Zaha Waheed, has violated the law.
At the Parliament sitting today, Speaker Nasheed said that with the new amendment to the Fisheries Act, changes took effect on 16 September 2019 and the Minister has to make the regulations stated within six months.
Nasheed said that the Parliament is observing if the Minister is making the said regulations.
He said that contrary to Minister Zaha saying that the regulations had been made and sent to AG Office for comment, the Parliament Committee has said that it had not happened.
And so, Minister Zaha has failed to carry out a constitutional duty and violated the law according to Speaker Nasheed.
The Speaker of Parliament said that he would get further details and share it with the MPs. Then, Speaker Nasheed acquired information through the Parliament’s clerical desk and said that four regulations have been sent from the Fisheries Ministry at 9:38 a.m. to be published on the state gazette.
He said that there are still three more regulations to be made and the parliament would decide the appropriate action.
