Words heat up after the Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed alleged that the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was involved in election fraud.

Last night, former President Nasheed took to Twitter saying that his predecessor, President Maumoon has meddled with every presidential election including the 2007 vote to change the governing system. Nasheed said that the only election President Maumoon has not interfered is the 2008 Presidential Election.

President Maumoon responded on Twitter asking as to why the 2008 election was not interfered with and that he is sadden because President Nasheed thinks the people are deranged.

The topic of changing the governing system has aroused after the MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir presented an amendment to change the system to a Parliamentary System.

However, President Maumoon tweeted against MP Jabir’s amendment saying that a Presidential System is the best system of government to the Maldives based on the nation's political, social and economic standpoint.

Maumoon said in 2007, the people decided that a Presidential System is the best for the country by a large majority.
