Prosecutor General (PG), Hussain Shameem has said that he would pursue the strongest possible action within the law against domestic abuse.

After a man was charged with attempted murder for pouring bleach into the mouth of his former wife in Raa Atoll Alifushi, PG Shameem indicated to the case on Twitter saying that the first ever charge using Section 110 (Homicide) with 82 (Criminal Attempt) for Attempted Murder since the enactment of 9/2014 (Penal Code).

“We will use full force of law against domestic abuse amounting to criminal offenses!” PG Shameem said.

There has been a recent spike in reported cases of domestic abuse and child rape in the Maldives.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has previously said that the government has a zero-tolerance policy for such cases.
