Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has said that work on the new port at the new cargo complex at Velana International Airport (VIA) is underway and that it is expected to be complete by coming February.
Speaking to "One", General Manager of MACL Hassan Areef said that the new cargo terminal project has been contracted to be finished by the coming February. He also added that judging by the rate that the work is progressing, the work is expected to finish within the timeline by February 2021.
In a tweet by MACL today, it was also confirmed that the new cargo complex harbor at VIA is also progressing alongside the Jetty area to facilitate cargo vessels. The jetty will be equipped with all necessary amenities including dedicated cranes to load and unload Air Cargo safely.
Hasan noted that five cranes will be installed in the area dedicated to air cargo work.
Works for the new cargo terminal with the capacity to handle 120,000 tonnes of cargo first began in January of 2018, during the Presidency of former president Abdulla Yameen. The project was awarded to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG).
The new cargo terminal is being developed next to the inflight catering services building at VIA, in an area of 12,000 meters while the port is being developed in an area of 15,000 meters.
