A number of foreign nationals have gathered near the National Stadium in Male’ City called to be sent back to their home countries.

Maldives Police Service said that a number of expatriate workers gathered near the stadium today but they now have been dispersed.

Talking to One Online regarding the matter, Deputy Mayor of Male’ City, Shamaau Shareef confirmed that the participants of the rally expressed that they want to go back home. The Deputy Mayor did not offer any further information.

Recently, expatriate workers have been protesting due to numerous issues. And so, there have been rallies due to delayed payments; one of which took place in Hulhumale’ where a confrontation between the protestors and the police got violent injuring a police officer.

A similar protest in Bodufinolhu, a resort development site, got violent which led to expatriates taking a few locals on site as hostages and police officers being injured before the situation was resolved.
